Mayer's 2-run single the difference against Bayside Yankees
June 6, 2004
Pleasantville, New York - Andy Mayer's 2-run single in the 3rd put TCB up 3-1, and Ben Merritt stranded the tying run at 3rd in the 7th, as TCB earned a doubleheader split by defeating the Bayside Yankees 3-2. TCB went up 1-0 in the first as Joe Ercolano and Mike O'Malley walked, and Mike Reeder was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A passed ball by Bayside catcher Nick Criaris allowed Ercolano to score. Bayside tied the game in the top of the 3rd. Bayside left-fielder Joe Barracato was hit by a pitch with one out, then stole second and third. It looked like TCB would get out of the inning unscathed, but a throwing error by TCB shortstop O'Malley extended the inning, allowing Barracato to score. TCB took the lead back for good in the bottom of the inning. After Ercolano led of the inning with a single, O'Malley grounded back to the pitcher. A miscommunication by the Bayside middle infield however, allowed both runners to be safe. Jason Rago then walked to load the bases. TCB catcher Reeder hit a fielder's choice to third as Ercolano was thrown out at the plate. After a strikeout, Mayer came up and singled to center field, scoring O'Malley and Rago. Bayside threatened in the 7th, scoring a run on 2 hits and an RBI groundout, but Merritt picked up his first save by stranding the tying run at 3rd by striking out Criaris and getting Mike Testani to ground out. As in game 1, TCB got strong pitching perfomance. Starter Dylan Gandossy picked up the win by going 3 innings, allowing only 1 hit, 1 unearned run, and striking out 2. Nick Erardi then pitched 2 scoreless innings, allowing only 1 hit. Merrit earned the save by pitching 2 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 run, and 1 strikeout. View Game 1 Recap and Box Score
