Gary Diaz is
going into his fourth year of coaching for TCB. He is entering his first
season as the 15u head coach after spending three seasons as an assistant
with the 18u Americans team. In his three seasons with the 18u Americans,
the team finished 4th Nationally in 2005 and 5th Nationally in 2006. Gary
will be one of the first head coaches who has played for the TCB program.
Gary played his collegiate baseball at Manhattan College in the Bronx, NY.
He graduated as the schools all time hit leader and is currently second to
Pittsburgh Pirates farm leaguer John Fitzpatrick. He currently holds several
offensive records for the Manhattan Jaspers; Career AB's, HR's in a game
(3), and RBI's in a game (9). He started 191 out of 198 games in his four
year career with the Jaspers.
In high school Gary was a two time all state infielder and starting
shortstop for the number one ranked team in Connecticut, Naugatuck High
School. He was also a two time All Naugatuck Valley League quarterback. He
was voted most outstanding senior player for the NVL baseball season and
earned Naugatuck's prestigious athlete of the year award in 2001.
As a 13 year old, Diaz was a National Tournament All-American in 1997.
This was the
same year the team won TCB's second National Championship. In 1999, Diaz was
named the National Tournament MVP as a 15 year old on the 16/u National
Championship Team. He was named an All American again in 2001 as the 18/u
Americans finished 3rd. Diaz was also named an All American a 4th time on
the 2002 18/u American team, that was the National Runner-Up. Diaz is TCB's
only 4-Time All American.
Diaz is the 18/u Americans Single-Season leader in At-Bats with 150
and Stolen Bases with 24. He ranks 2nd in Games Played (44), Runs
Scored (55), Hits (54), Doubles (12), and Triples (10). He is 8th on
the 18/u Americans Career Leader list with a .360 average, 7th in
games played with 78, 5th in At-Bats with 261, 4th in Runs with 92,
T4th in Hits with 94, T7th in Doubles with 16, 2nd in Triple with 13,
8th in RBI's with 49, and 1st in Stolen Bases with 39.
Gary is currently the Varsity Head Coach for the Warren Harding Presidents.
He's going into his second year with the team after leading them to a 2-18
season after going 0-60 the three previous years. Diaz is a physical
education teacher for the City of Bridgeport and also works for Perfect
Game, assisting during showcases and other events.
